WSEI is based on the unexpressed potential of increasing access to sustainable energy by fostering women's involvement, recognizing past and current efforts at redressing gender imbalances women are facing regarding access to resources, including energy.
WSEI is a contribution to the EU Gender Action Plan, SDG 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls) and SDG 7 (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all) as well as SE4ALL objectives.
Barefoot Power is selected by the EU and is charged with implementing WISE (Women Increasing Sustainable Energy access and use), a comprehensive action targeting at increasing the involvement of women in solar and clean cooking technologies, boosting their active role, their entrepreneurship and improving their access to energy services.
WISE project is taking place in Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone where women are being supported to build sustainable energy businesses through incubator hubs and to access affordable finance. The women as the core target are also being imparted with energy based technical and entrepreneurial skills.
Sustainable energy enterprises under WISE include lighting and household energy solutions, post-harvest management, (milling, grinding, cooling, drying), clean cooking and the associated technical skills development and creation of jobs for the youth.
